Heat Transfer Fin Analysis
Heat Transfer Fin Analysis – Problem Set Reflection
For my portfolio assignment, I selected Problem Set #5 from MAE 3240 Heat Transfer, which focused on fin heat transfer and transient heating analysis. In this assignment, I analyzed a cylindrical pin fin exposed to airflow and calculated quantities such as the temperature distribution along the fin, fin effectiveness, fin efficiency, and the thermal resistance of both a single fin and a full fin array. The problem also extended to modeling a heat sink attached to a heated surface and determining how much the heat sink reduced the heater temperature. Working through these calculations helped me better understand how extended surfaces increase heat dissipation by increasing surface area and reducing overall thermal resistance in a system.
The second part of the assignment involved analyzing the heating of a wire submerged in oil using the lumped capacitance method. This required balancing Joule heating with convective heat transfer and solving a transient temperature equation to determine how the wire temperature changes over time. This part of the problem helped reinforce how transient heat transfer differs from steady-state analysis and how simplifying assumptions, such as lumped capacitance, can make complex problems easier to model. Overall, this assignment helped strengthen my understanding of how thermal systems are modeled using both physical intuition and mathematical relationships. These skills will be useful in future mechanical engineering courses and in real engineering applications where thermal management and heat dissipation are critical design considerations.
